Getting to Playa del Carmen

Playa sits between the two airports, which is one of its quieter advantages. Cancún International Airport (CUN) is 55 kilometers north, roughly an hour by car, and offers far more flights. Tulum International Airport (TQO) is 65 kilometers south, a similar journey in the opposite direction, and is the newer and calmer of the two.

Do I need a car in Playa del Carmen?

Not to enjoy Quinta Avenida and the beach, both of which are walkable. You will want one for the beach clubs north of town, the ferry at dawn, the eco-parks, the cenotes, and anything in Playacar or the Mayakoba corridor. Most guests hire a chauffeur for the days they intend to leave the centre.

Approximately 55 kilometers, or 34 miles, south along Highway 307. Most transfers take between 50 minutes and an hour, depending on traffic and where in Playa you are staying.

About 65 kilometers, or 40 miles, north. The journey usually takes 50 minutes to an hour.

Cancún is marginally closer and offers considerably more flights. Tulum is newer and quieter, and may suit if the schedule works. We provide private transfers from both.
