Holbox Island
A Hidden Paradise in the Mexican Caribbean
Private Chauffeur Service to the Chiquilá Ferry
There are no cars on Holbox. There is no bridge either. The island sits off the northern tip of the Yucatán, and reaching it means a drive to the port at Chiquilá and a ferry from there, about twenty to twenty-five minutes across.
The drive is the longer part. Chiquilá is two to two and a half hours from Cancún International Airport, north and then west across country that empties out fast. Black Luxury Service covers it in both directions, with a chauffeur waiting at the port when the ferry brings you back. (Ferry service and taxis on the island are not included.)
Getting to Holbox Island
Most guests come from Cancún, two to two and a half hours by car. From Playa del Carmen it is closer to three, and from Tulum longer still, though we drive it from anywhere on the coast.
It is not a journey to leave to chance. The ferries stop running in the evening, the road out to Chiquilá is quiet, and a missed crossing means a night in a port town rather than on the island. Your chauffeur plans the departure around the sailing rather than the other way round.
Things to do on Holbox Island
Whale Sharks and the Yum Balam Reserve
Holbox sits inside the Yum Balam Nature Reserve, and the wildlife is the reason to come. Whale sharks pass through from June to September, and swimming alongside the largest fish in the sea is the thing most guests remember.
Beyond them, visitors can:
- Relax on Playa Holbox, where shallow turquoise water and hammocks strung out into the sea make the postcard everyone has seen
- Kayak through the mangroves and find flamingos, pelicans, and a great deal else
- Explore Punta Mosquito, a sandbank running out into clear water with nothing built on it
Eating on Holbox
The food is better than an island this size has any right to have. Fresh seafood, beachfront dining, and traditional Yucatán cooking, with lobster pizza, ceviche, and tikin xic fish the dishes people talk about afterward. The rooftop bars are where the sunsets get watched.
The last ferries leave in the evening and the drive back to Cancún is a long one. A car waiting at Chiquilá means you step off the boat and into it, rather than looking for a ride in a port town after dark.
